The little town of Kaycee adopted its name from the KC Ranch where rancher / rustler Nate Champion held off the massed Johnson County War invaders for most of a day.  A marker just south of Kaycee commemorates the fight.

West of Kaycee is the famous Hole-in-the-Wall country where Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and other outlaws found safe refuge for themselves and their stolen livestock.
