Lovell is a town known for its roses and the spectacular Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (click here for pictures.)  The reservoir is bordered to the west by the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range; at the southern end of the lake is the restored ML Ranch site, headquarters of an enormous ranching operation run by Henry Clay Lovell during the cattle baron days.

In 1905 two farmers at nearby Byron discovered a major natural gas field while trying to build a fence.  When they noticed gas venting from a newly dug post hole, they turned scientist and tried to light it on fire -- it burned very well, thank you.
