Sheridan was born during the cattle boom, a town brought to life by
aristocratic cattle barons. The Bradford Brinton Memorial Museum in the
nearby hamlet of Big Horn is a classic example of their lifestyle.
This
neo-colonial house built by the aristocratic Scottish brothers William and
Malcolm Moncreiffe, was headquarters for their Quarter Circle A Ranch. The
Moncreiffes played polo on what was probably the first polo field in the nation
at the nearby ranch home of their English kin, the Wallops. Bradford
Brinton, a wealthy gentleman from Chicago, bought the Moncreiffe ranch in the
1920's, enlarged it and filled it to overflowing with a spectacular
collection of Western art. Although it may not feel like it belongs
here, the museum is an authentic piece of Wyoming history and an
interesting place to visit.
Within Sheridan are other pieces of this upper class
heritage, including the Kendrick mansion preserved as the Trail End
Historic Center, and the wonderful architecture of the historic Sheridan
Inn, whose prominent guests included Presidents Roosevelt, Taft, and
Hoover.
