Built in
1867 to protect the UP railroad workers and named Fort D. A. Russell after a
Civil War general. The associated supply depot, Camp Carlin (later
known as Cheyenne Depot) was the second largest supply point in the west,
serving forts up to 500 miles away. The fort was renamed Fort Francis
E. Warren in 1930 in honor of Wyoming’s U.S. Senator for 37 years. In
1947 with the establishment of the Air Force, it was renamed F. E. Warren
Air Force Base. Located west of Cheyenne, the base museum has many
historical displays.
