Fort Fetterman
1867 - 1882

Built on a wind-swept hill overlooking the North Platte River, Fort Fetterman served as the last U.S. bastion facing Lakota country after the Bozeman Trail forts were abandoned in 1868.  The fort was named for Lieutenant Fetterman, killed near Fort Phil Kearny in 1866, and was the supply base for General Crook’s 1876 Powder River Expeditions.  The partially restored site is located seven miles northwest of Douglas on WY Highway 93.
