Cantonment
(temporary) Reno was built on the west bank of the Powder River as a supply
base for General Crook’s Big Horn Expedition. The fort was renamed
Fort McKinney in honor of Lieutenant John McKinney killed in the nearby Dull
Knife battle of 1876. In 1878 the fort (well developed but facing
water, grass, and lumber shortages) was relocated 45 miles northwest to
Buffalo.
It served as a peace keeping presence in the Big Horn
area until it was abandoned in 1894 (some Buffalo residents thought this was
in reprisal for their role in the 1892 Johnson County War.) The site
(with three original buildings) is now the Wyoming Soldiers and Sailors
home.
