Located
five miles southeast of Story, this fort was built by Colonel Henry
Carrington to protect the Bozeman Trail. First called Fort Carrington,
it was renamed in honor of Civil War hero General Philip Kearny.
Called the “hated fort” by the Lakota, it was the focal point for the Indian
wars of 1866-1868. When abandoned, the fort was immediately burned by
Indians. The site has been partially restored and a reconstructed
building serves as a museum.
