Fort Sanders
1866 - 1882

Fort John Buford protected railroad survey parties and traffic on the Overland Trail.  It was renamed in honor of Civil War hero Brigadier General William Sanders.  The fort was abandoned in 1882 when operations were transferred to Fort Fred Steele and Fort D. A. Russell.  There is a marker at the site located just south of Laramie.
