Fort Washakie
1869 - 1909

Established as Camp Augur in present-day Lander, it provided protection for the Shoshone reservation.  It was renamed Camp Brown in 1870 and in 1871 was relocated 15 miles northwest to the Little Wind River.  Renamed Fort Washakie in 1878, it was one of a few forts named after an Indian chief.  The site is now the administrative headquarters for the Wind River Indian Agency.
